Lot#: 135

DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham, Dennison, Howard & Davis, 15J, 18S, 14K gold (tested) original "J.H" HC with attractive engraving detail including a countryside home scene to front, rear with armorial type imagery of a lion and a wolf standing on hind legs with their front legs on a crest, gold cuvette, white enamel dial, KWKS (key not included with this lot), gilt mvt, s#1547. Gross weight of assembled watch 79.3 dwt (123.4 g). An attractive and scarce gold cased example of this historically important early watch, the "Dennison, Howard & Davis" grade was produced by Waltham's predecessor the Boston Watch Co. between approximately 1854 and 1857. We do not know the identity of the "J.H" casemaker, but note that we have handled two other original gold cased Dennison, Howard & Davis with this case marking in past years. This example was previously owned by noted collector and horological author Bill Meggers, as evident from the distinctive thick plastic bag with inventory label in Meggers' distinctive style.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, good gilt tone, some scattered mild haze spots; flawless dial; excellent hands, minute with few small bends; case shows medium wear, cuvette with a ding near winding aperture, reduced engraving detail; tight bow thinned substantially at top, push shows ample wear; good glass crystal.
ESTIMATE: $3000 - $4600
